Worcester Bosch boilers

1) Worcester Bosch Boilers

Without a doubt, Worcester Bosch has the no.1 brand when it comes to boilers; no one could deny that. They boast a perfect blend of British heating industry knowledge and German engineering.

We have taken a deeper look into this top boiler brand to find out why Worcester branded products are no.1 here in the UK.

Customer Support

Worcester Bosch’s customer support is the best in the industry, bar none. They make it easy for customers to get in touch, and their customer service team is available seven days a week, 364 days a year!

Worcester’s support to gas engineers is also awe-inspiring, as they have office-based Worcester trained technical engineers who can stand in front of the same Worcester Bosch boiler that your engineer is calling about and talk them through any issues they are having “live” – that’s pretty awesome!

Boiler Range

Not many can rival Worcester Bosch when it comes to boiler range. You’ll practically always find a suitable boiler from their range, including combi, regular and system boilers across all fuel types, including gas, LPG, and even oil boilers.

Worcester oil boilers, in particular, are known for being one of the best oil boiler brands. If you are looking for an oil boiler, check out our guide here.

From a small flat to the largest detached properties, Worcester Bosch has a solution for all homes, and they boast the most complete range of boilers in the industry.

Boiler Warranty

Worcester shines when it comes to warranty. Or, to quote Worcester properly, they refer to it as a guarantee.

They put the customer first at every opportunity and take pride in ensuring that any issues get sorted out quickly and properly.

They have a nationwide team of directly employed and highly trained service engineers, ready and poised to deal with any in-guarantee assistance which may be required.

Having read through the terms of the guarantee offered by Worcester, it’s refreshingly short and fair. They call it a “no-quibble” guarantee, and we’d have to agree that there doesn’t appear to be much in the way of exclusions.

Their top of the range boilers come with a 10-year warranty, provided a Worcester Bosch system filter is fitted, and you pick a quality installer.

This means more so than any other boiler brand; if you have a Worcester Bosch boiler fitted, you can relax safe in the knowledge that they will look after you if anything goes wrong.

The new Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000 lifestyle range of boilers is designed so that there really isn’t a need to hide them away, as is usually the case with boilers.

Boiler style and design

Designed with curved edges and an attractive looking front display, the Worcester Bosch 8000 lifestyle boiler will add to the style of your home rather than detract from it.

Our only criticism of the Worcester Bosch range of boilers is that the boilers in their premium lifestyle 8000 range, in particular, are pretty large, and so you probably won’t be able to fit them inside a cupboard; unless it’s a vast cupboard!

Boiler Price and Value for money

Worcester Bosch boilers are priced at the premium end of the market, and yet in our opinion, their boilers still represent some of the best value for money available.

If you consider the whole package, from the vast range of boilers they have, the stylish and modern design options through to the comprehensive warranty and customer support, they really do provide the whole package.

For the sake of a few hundred pounds more, we’d always recommend going for a Worcester Bosch boiler if you can.

Ideal boilers

2) Ideal Boilers

Next in our top 3 best boiler brands is Ideal. A solid British boiler brand that has been manufacturing boilers from their base in Hull for over 100 years.

That alone should be enough for anyone buying a boiler to take notice of them. We’ve dug a little deeper and found out exactly why Ideal are a top boiler brand.

Customer Support

Like Worcester Bosch, the Ideal boilers support team is available 364 days a year.

Whilst they don’t appear to be equipped quite as well, the Worcester Bosch customer support team (no one is), they provide a good service, and there’s usually not a long wait time to get through on the phone.

Ideal also enables customers to get in touch by alternative means such as email, website contact form and even social media.

Boiler range

Ideal boilers have an excellent range of gas boilers, and they have a suitable boiler for most applications.

They cater for gas and LPG but don’t currently have any oil boilers in their range.

If you have an (extremely) large house, you may need to look at their Keston brand of boilers designed for large domestic and commercial installations.

Boiler Warranty

If you are considering an Ideal Boiler, you will be pleased to know that they have 10-year warranty’s available across most of their range.

And in terms of the warranty itself, Ideal are reasonably quick at responding to “in-warranty” repairs, and their warranty terms appear to be fair and without lots of unreasonable exclusions.

Ideal boast a fully employed team of trained service engineers across the country.

Boiler style and design

The Ideal Logic range of boilers are well designed and have a pleasant backlit led display on the front.

Available in white only, you might still want to have the boiler installed out of sight, but the good news is that the Ideal Logic range of boilers is compact enough to fit inside most kitchen cupboards!

Boiler Price and Value for money

Ideal boilers, and the Logic range specifically, are priced very competitively and are much closer to the “budget” boilers than premium, even though they produce their good quality boilers right here in the UK.

If the price of a Worcester boiler is just too much for you to be comfortable with, or you need a boiler that is small enough to fit in a kitchen cupboard, you really can’t go wrong with an Ideal Logic boiler.

We think these boilers represent some of the best value of money available, and that is why they have beaten out some fairly stiff competition to claim to no.2 spot.

Alpha boilers

3) Alpha Boilers

Alpha are an interesting boiler brand, having been on the go in the UK for over 50 years. Recently bought over by a large Italian manufacturer, Immergas, Alpha appear to be taking a big swing at the UK boiler market again and has found itself at no.3 in our list of the best boiler brands.

Customer Support

Open six days a week, including bank holidays and excluding Christmas Day, Alpha’s customer support team is available all year round though never on a Sunday.

So if you have an issue that you want to discuss with Alpha on a Sunday, you’ll need to wait until Monday.

We don’t think this is the end of the world but worth knowing.

Boiler range

Alpha has a really impressive range of combi boilers as well as regular and system boilers in a wide range of outputs.

They don’t currently offer oil boilers like Worcester Bosch, but they have gas and LPG options.

Overall, you should be able to find a suitable new boiler from Alpha, regardless of the size of the home you live in.

Boiler Warranty

10-year warranties are available on several of Alpha’s boilers, and even their “budget” In-Tec model, which comes as standard with a 7-year warranty, is available with ten years if you buy through a top quality installer.

There was just one term within the warranty terms and conditions to look out for, and that is if you call out Alpha to carry out an “in-warranty” repair, and you cannot tell Alpha the details of who installed it, they reserve the right to charge you a call-out fee of £84.00.

They will return the £84.00 if you can provide proof that a gas safe registered engineer installed the boiler, and this is easy to do, but it’s much better if you just have the details ready at the time of calling and avoid the need to pay out the £84.00 in the first place.

Otherwise, Alpha does provide a good warranty service.

Boiler style and design

The Alpha range of boilers and the E-Tec, in particular, are relatively standard looking boilers. They’re definitely not as stylish as something like a Worcester 8000 Style, and the Ideal Logic range of boilers is a little bit sleeker looking, but they’re certainly not ugly to look at. Just a bit standard looking.

This might not be an issue depending on your priorities, especially if the boiler is going inside a cupboard.

And if having the boiler installed in a cupboard is your plan, you’ll be pleased to know that the Alpha E-Tec range of boilers are compact and will fit inside most kitchen cupboards.

Boiler Price and Value for money

Honestly, this is why Alpha Boilers are in the top 3 best boiler brands, in our opinion. In the In-Tec, they produce a boiler with a high specification, good quality components such as a stainless steel heat exchanger, and a 10-year warranty at an incredibly low price.

Get yourself an instant quote, and you’ll see what we mean.

If budget is the driving factor in your decision to get a new boiler and you’re not too bothered about how it looks, the Alpha In-Tec range of boilers is tough to see past, and you should give it some serious consideration.

Other boiler manufacturers

So, there’s the top 3. But there are plenty of other boiler brands on the market, and just because they didn’t get into our top 3 doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider them.

We’ve summarised the most popular boiler brands which haven’t already been mentioned below.

Vaillant boilers

Vaillant Boilers

The Vaillant Group are a 140+ year old manufacturer of heating appliances. Based in Germany, employing over 15,000 people, they aren’t new to the heating game, and they have some top quality boilers.

They boast a wide range of boilers for all types of homes, and they offer good quality warranty’s of up to 10 years on their premium boilers.

A downside to Vaillant is the pricing. Their premium boilers are hideously expensive, which stacks the cards against them when competing against the likes of Worcester Bosch.

The other issue is that their “budget” boilers come with a relatively short 2-year warranty, which causes them to get blasted out of the water by the likes of Alpha.

If you had had a Vaillant boiler before and were happy with it, and you don’t care too much about the cost, perhaps sticking with Vaillant wouldn’t be a bad idea.

At this moment in time, there are better options out there, in our opinion.

viessmann boiler factory

Viessmann Boilers

Viessmann, another giant German manufacturer, has been around for a long time, although they are only just now becoming more popular in the UK heating market.

Most of the Viessmann boilers are manufactured in Germany. However, the entry-level Viessmann boiler (Vitodens 050 W) is apparently made in Turkey, presumably to cut costs, which takes a little bit of the “German engineering” sheen off of this model.

Most of their boilers use an innovative stainless steel heat exchanger, which apparently extends the boiler’s life.

Viessmann has a reasonably wide range of boilers to choose from, including combi, regular, and systems boilers. They also have storage combi boilers.

They don’t appear to produce an oil boiler for the domestic market at present, but they do have LPG options if you want a Viessmann boiler installed in a home that is off the mains grid.

Viessmann falls short when it comes to customer service and warranty. They didn’t appear to have many Viessmann service engineers in the field for quite a while and seemed to rely entirely on appointed service agents.

Not great when you are buying what is billed as a “premium” boiler.

This situation may be improving, and so we are keeping a close eye on Viessmann boilers.

Baxi boilers customer support van

Baxi Boilers

At one point, Baxi was undoubtedly the UK’s leading manufacturers in the boiler industry. However, they’re not as popular today as they once were. Why?

We’re not sure. Brands like Worcester put a lot of time and effort (and money) into developing their brand and their products, and they seem to have “won the war” when it comes to consumer perception of the brand.

Baxi has found itself in an awkward position where they produce good quality boilers which can’t really be sold at the budget price range, and yet they aren’t perceived to be as high quality as Worcester (even though they may be).

Baxi has a wide range of boilers for all types of homes, including combi, regular and system boilers, and whilst they’re not the most stylish on the market, they’re not bad looking boilers.

The Baxi customer support service is, and always has been, very good.

They have the largest team of service engineers out of all the manufacturers, and these engineers are very experienced.

You could do a lot worse than Baxi. If, for some reason, if you aren’t interested in the top 3 boiler manufacturers, we have recommended, it might be worth taking a look at what they have to offer.

Potterton boilers

Potterton Boilers

Owned by the same parent company as Baxi, BDR Thermea, Potterton are essentially the same as Baxi Boilers, just with different model names and come with varying lengths of warranty.

Not quite as popular as they once were, Potterton’s range of domestic boilers appears to be getting “phased-out” by BDR Thermea, or at least they don’t seem to be trying to grow the brand when it comes to domestic boilers.

If you buy a Potterton boiler, the warranty is provided by Baxi. So, you might just be better getting yourself a Baxi boiler with a longer warranty.

With that said, certain Potterton boilers may be available at a lower price than the Baxi equivalent, and so buying a Potterton boiler might be quite a cheap way to access Baxi build quality and aftercare, which is good.

Main Boilers, from Main Heating, are a similar option, as they too are owned by BDR Thermea and use Baxi sourced internals.

Glow worm combi boiler

Glow-Worm Boilers

Founded in 1934 in Derbyshire and still based there today, Glow-Worm is another heritage brand in the UK central heating market. Owned by the Vaillant Group, Glow-Worm has a good quality range of boilers sold at a reasonably competitive price.

The warranty’s on offer from Glow-Worm boilers range from 3 to 7 years depending on the model, and the in-warranty repair service is quite good.

There isn’t much to say about Glow-Worm, which is negative; it’s just that their boilers don’t come out on top in any category, including price, so we don’t have a reason to recommend them over any of our top 3 at this time.

We hear of installers recommending the Glow-Worm Flexicom boiler with rear exit flue in situations where space is very tight.

It’s one of the few combi boilers on the market with a rear exit flue, that is, a flue that terminates from directly behind the boiler rather than the top of the boiler, reducing the amount of wall space required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best boiler brand?

Worcester Bosch is the best boiler brand in our opinion due to the excellent reliability of their boilers and outstanding customer service. Which? Consumer reports tend to favour Worcester, as well as Vaillant.

What is the best gas boiler on the market?

Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000 Style Combi boiler. This boiler is available in black or white, powerful, reliable, and stunning to look at; no other boiler comes close currently.

Which boilers are most reliable?

Worcester Bosch are the most reliable boilers according to the latest Which? Annual boiler survey.

Are Vaillant boilers better than Worcester Bosch?

No. In our opinion, Worcester boilers are better than Vaillant due to their reliability, pricing, and customer support.

What boilers are made in the UK?

This depends on the specific boiler model, as some manufacturers have some models made in the UK and some overseas. The key thing is understanding why the boiler is produced overseas.
For example, if we take Viessmann, their boilers are mainly made in Germany, but their budget model is made in Turkey. On the other hand, Worcester Bosch makes most of their boilers in the UK, but their premium lifestyle 8000 range of boilers are made in Germany.
Two very different reasons for producing boilers in another country, but this shouldn’t be the most important factor in your decision-making process.
